Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one meant for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained functional.
